Do I need any prior experience with Canva or graphic design?

No prior experience is necessary! This course is designed for beginners and anyone looking to enhance their social media presence.

That being said, if you have experience with Canva, you will still get lots out of our course- we dive into how to how to apply design and brand principals to your brand, and there will be opportunities to extend on your knowledge, ask questions and of course learn how to then translate this into a captivating and professional social media presence.

What is the duration of the course?

The course runs for two hours, ensuring you have ample time to learn and practice each topic covered.

What do I need to bring on the day?

You’ll need a laptop or tablet with internet access. There will be free wifi available to connect to.

If you already have a Canva account, please bring your login details. If not, we’ll help you set one up. To get the most out of Canva we do recommend you sign up to Canva Pro ($165 per year and well worth it!) But you can still complete the course using the free account.

You will also need all of your brand assets, ready to create your Brand Kit in Canva. This includes all versions of your logo files, your brand colours and their codes, the fonts you use and any additional graphics (think illustrations, icons, patterns etc.)

What are Canva Brand Kits, and why are they important?

A Canva Brand Kit helps you maintain consistent branding across all your designs. We’ll guide you in setting up your Brand Kit to ensure your visuals align with your brand identity.

What if I don't have a completed brand to bring along?

If you don’t have logo files, colours or fonts for your brand, get in touch with Renae and we can talk about what you might need. You can still complete our course without a complete brand, and it is something we can work on building together!

How do the personalized audits work?

Before the course, you’ll submit your current social media images. Renae and Emilee will review them and provide a personalized audit with actionable feedback during the course.

What if I have questions after the course?

You’ll have access to a private Facebook Group where you can ask questions, share your work, and get ongoing support from Renae, Emilee, and fellow participants.

What types of templates will we create?

You’ll walk away with 5 social media templates that will be customized to fit your brand’s unique style and needs.

These might include a testimonial template, a carousel, a checklist, a quote template, reel covers, story templates, highlights covers.

Can I use Canva on my mobile device?

Yes, Canva has a mobile app that you can use. However, for this course, we recommend using a laptop or tablet for a better learning experience.

How can ChatGPT help with my social media content?

We’ll teach you how to use the ChatGPT prompts we supply to customise for your business and generate and repurpose engaging social media content, making your content creation process easier and more efficient.

Is there a limit to the number of participants in the course?

Yes, to ensure personalized attention and effective learning, we limit the number of participants. Early registration is recommended to secure your place!

What if I’m unable to attend the course?

If you are no longer able to attend the course, you are able to transfer your ticket to another participant, or you can keep your ticket and attend a future course.

  • Today is International Hyperemesis Gravidarum Day. It’s not something I talk about often, but I lived through it- twice. And it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever experienced. HG isn’t just “morning sickness.” It’s relentless, all-consuming, and for me, it stripped away every ounce of energy, joy, and normalcy during my two pregnancies. It was hospital trips, isolation, guilt, and survival mode. But out of that fog, there were lessons that stuck with me. ✨ You never really know what someone is going through. I’ve learnt to carry that with me every day. The colleague who’s quiet, the friend who cancels last minute, the parent who looks like they’re just holding it together- we have no idea what their unseen battles are. 💛 Compassion matters. Especially the kind we offer ourselves. I had to learn to soften the voice in my head, to ask for help, and to accept that doing my best looked different on different days. (Still something I have to work on!) 🌿 This too shall pass. It became my quiet mantra. And eventually, the clouds did lift. Life returned, not the same- but deeper somehow.   • Over Easter hubby and I took the family to Tasmania and… wow. Not only is it breathtakingly beautiful but what really stood out was just how well-branded the entire state is. From airport signage to artisan markets, Tasmania knows exactly who it is- and that identity flows through everything. The tone, the visuals, the messaging… it all feels purposeful and unified. Fun fact? Tasmania was the first place in Australia to set up a statutory place-branding authority- basically, a team dedicated to shaping how people feel about the place, not just how it looks. And it shows. They’ve taken things that could be perceived as weakness ‘we’re isolated so everything from here costs more’ and turned them into points of difference and reasons to visit- ‘we are boutique and bespoke and focus on quality over quantity,’ and ‘we have something unique that you can’t find on the mainland.’ The focus on environment and protecting the wilderness is apparent wherever you go- there’s a connection to the land that feels so much stronger than much of mainland Australia, and everything from the signs along the highway, to the towns that incorporate quirky editions to celebrate their smallest residents [the penguin rubbish bins, road markers and giant 3m high penguin in the gorgeous sea-side town of Penguin] there’s a passion for nature that you can’t help but get swept up in. Combine the wilderness and breathtaking scenery with the history of the oldest towns in Australia with the most wonderfully quirky buildings, [and don’t even get me started on @monamuseum - I could do an entire post just on that crazy wonderful place!] we barely scratched the surface, and will not take any convincing to return to this beautiful part of Australia. It’s a brilliant reminder that branding isn’t just for products or businesses—it’s about identity, trust, and connection. Whether you’re a region, a shop, or a solo operator, your brand is the story you’re telling every day.   • Controversial Tip: it's ok to start DIY with your branding. What?! A Graphic Designer suggesting you DON'T use her services? Hear me out. When you’re launching a business, it’s easy to get caught up in the perfect logo, the perfect brand colours, the perfect website. But here’s the truth—your brand will evolve as your business does. And in the beginning, spending big on branding before you’ve truly figured out your business and its target market, messaging, and long term vision *can* be a mistake. Instead of stalling your launch waiting for perfection, start with something. A simple, clear logo. Stick to text based logos, and steer clear of Canva templates that every man and his beauty salon have used. Pick a few colours that feel right and match your business 'vibe'. Be consistent in your choice of fonts and imagery. Build a website that gets the job done, and your name out there. Then, as your business grows and you understand your audience better, that’s the time to refine and invest in branding that truly represents where you're headed. I’ve seen too many business owners waste time (and money!) worrying about getting it just right before they even have customers or money coming through the door. The truth? Your first version doesn’t have to be forever—it just has to be functional while you find your feet. You may find after you test the waters that your business pivots, or you work out what it is you really want to be doing, and what's the point of investing in expensive branding if it no longer aligns so soon into your business journey? IN SAYING THAT, some businesses WILL benefit from professional branding from the start, especially if they're coming from a position of experience or are in a tried and tested market, or need to ensure they're looking absolutely schmick from the get go. But if you’re hesitating to launch because your branding isn’t perfect yet, take this as your sign to just start. Ugly, simple, DIY—it doesn’t matter. What matters is getting out there, proving your concept, and then refining your branding when the time is right.
  • So it turns out being an Adult/Mum/Business Owner is largely about being tired and Googling stuff am I right?! My Google search history is a thing of great mystery and often hilarity, and whilst the things I've Googled over the years have changed ('Can you die from sleep deprivation?' has turned into 'How to Stop My 8 Year Old Sleep Walking Every Night') I do find that I have a few business searches that keep coming back time and time again. Things like: ❔ Difference between Gross and Net Profit ❔ How to reply to an email without sounding passive-aggressive ❔ A3 Paper Size (why can I never remember this!) ❔ Best Size for Facebook Event Graphics ❔ Is Instagram Down Today? ❔ Best Music To Listen To For Productivity ❔ How Does LinkedIn Work? And don't get me started on how much I use IMDB when watching tv (sorry husband!). What things are you always Googling?
  • Branding is a promise. When you see the logo or identifying symbol of a brand, to you, there is an implied promise - probably based on the brand’s marketing or the experience you or someone you know has had with the brand. Though most brands have probably identified ‘the promise’ they wish to impart, it can still be subjective to the consumer. What does your business ‘promise’? Is it quality, reliability, good health, humour… the list goes on. Make sure what you promise to your customers is evident in your branding. Branding is more than just your logo. It is the colours you use, the design elements, photography and writing style, communication with your customers, {don’t forget your email signature!} clothes you wear and even your shop fit out. An example of a brand that nails their promise? @annah_farm Their tagline- 'honest, homemade, happiness' more than sums it up, and is displayed at every single touchpoint of the brand.   • I interrupt your Christmas-New Year break with a story from Christmas morning that is the perfect example of the power of brand recognition. We're sitting around the tree opening presents, when it comes time to open two big boxes that are almost the same size as my 7 year old. He and his sister haul them over and Henry spots a gap on his sister's box where the wrapping hasn't quite gone the full way round. All that he could see was a strip of dark blue, no writing or any other graphics, just 20cm or so of colour (swipe to see the colour). 'Whatever this is, it'll be good Lu!' he says. 'How do you know that?' I ask. 'Well it's from @adventurekingsgear Mum!' My 7 year old had guess what was in their presents, purely from a colour peeking through the paper. I wouldn't be surprised if something similar happened in your household, say if a certain hot pink colour was unwrapped? Imagine having a brand that was so strong, that a single glimpse of colour would have you instantly recognised? Now I'm not saying we're all going to reach meteoric levels of brand recognition like Barbie has, but Adventure Kings is an Aussie brand that has leveraged their brand so that a camping-mad 7 year old instantly recognises its products, simply by consistently using the same colour blue. Have a think about how you can improve on your brand recognition (and it doesn't have to be with a colour! Even a phrase can do the same thing for your brand! They’ve taken things that could be perceived as weakness ‘we’re isolated so everything from here costs more’ and turned them into points of difference and reasons to visit- ‘we are boutique and bespoke and focus on quality over quantity,’ and ‘we have something unique that you can’t find on the mainland.’ The focus on environment and protecting the wilderness is apparent wherever you go- there’s a connection to the land that feels so much stronger than much of mainland Australia, and everything from the signs along the highway, to the towns that incorporate quirky editions to celebrate their smallest residents [the penguin rubbish bins, road markers and giant 3m high penguin in the gorgeous sea-side town of Penguin] there’s a passion for nature that you can’t help but get swept up in. Combine the wilderness and breathtaking scenery with the history of the oldest towns in Australia with the most wonderfully quirky buildings, [and don’t even get me started on @monamuseum - I could do an entire post just on that crazy wonderful place!] we barely scratched the surface, and will not take any convincing to return to this beautiful part of Australia. It’s a brilliant reminder that branding isn’t just for products or businesses—it’s about identity, trust, and connection. Whether you’re a region, a shop, or a solo operator, your brand is the story you’re telling every day. Controversial Tip: it's ok to start DIY with your branding. What?! A Graphic Designer suggesting you DON'T use her services? Hear me out. When you’re launching a business, it’s easy to get caught up in the perfect logo, the perfect brand colours, the perfect website. But here’s the truth—your brand will evolve as your business does. And in the beginning, spending big on branding before you’ve truly figured out your business and its target market, messaging, and long term vision *can* be a mistake. Instead of stalling your launch waiting for perfection, start with something. A simple, clear logo. Stick to text based logos, and steer clear of Canva templates that every man and his beauty salon have used. Pick a few colours that feel right and match your business 'vibe'. Be consistent in your choice of fonts and imagery. Build a website that gets the job done, and your name out there. Then, as your business grows and you understand your audience better, that’s the time to refine and invest in branding that truly represents where you're headed. I’ve seen too many business owners waste time (and money!) worrying about getting it just right before they even have customers or money coming through the door. The truth? Your first version doesn’t have to be forever—it just has to be functional while you find your feet. You may find after you test the waters that your business pivots, or you work out what it is you really want to be doing, and what's the point of investing in expensive branding if it no longer aligns so soon into your business journey? IN SAYING THAT, some businesses WILL benefit from professional branding from the start, especially if they're coming from a position of experience or are in a tried and tested market, or need to ensure they're looking absolutely schmick from the get go. But if you’re hesitating to launch because your branding isn’t perfect yet, take this as your sign to just start. Ugly, simple, DIY—it doesn’t matter. So it turns out being an Adult/Mum/Business Owner is largely about being tired and Googling stuff am I right?! I interrupt your Christmas-New Year break with a story from Christmas morning that is the perfect example of the power of brand recognition. We're sitting around the tree opening presents, when it comes time to open two big boxes that are almost the same size as my 7 year old. He and his sister haul them over and Henry spots a gap on his sister's box where the wrapping hasn't quite gone the full way round. All that he could see was a strip of dark blue, no writing or any other graphics, just 20cm or so of colour (swipe to see the colour). 'Whatever this is, it'll be good Lu!' he says. 'How do you know that?' I ask. 'Well it's from @adventurekingsgear Mum!' My 7 year old had guess what was in their presents, purely from a colour peeking through the paper. I wouldn't be surprised if something similar happened in your household, say if a certain hot pink colour was unwrapped? Imagine having a brand that was so strong, that a single glimpse of colour would have you instantly recognised? Now I'm not saying we're all going to reach meteoric levels of brand recognition like Barbie has, but Adventure Kings is an Aussie brand that has leveraged their brand so that a camping-mad 7 year old instantly recognises its products, simply by consistently using the same colour blue. Have a think about how you can improve on your brand recognition (and it doesn't have to be with a colour! Even a phrase can do the same thing for your brand! Think 'I'm lovin' It' or 'Did Somebody Say...' - tell me you aren't instantly humming along to the song used by KFC!) Want help creating a brand that sticks in your customer's minds?
